UK Work Permit After Study: The Complete Guide for International Students

Have you finished your studies and want to begin your career in the UK? The Graduate visa is for you. The transition from a student visa to a Graduate visa is relatively straightforward if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Let’s take a look at how international students can apply for a work permit in the UK after finishing their studies.

What is the UK post-study work visa?

The UK post-study work visa is called the Graduate visa. It allows you to live and work in the UK for a certain amount of time after finishing your studies.

It is different to other UK work visas, such as the Skilled Worker visa, as you do not need a job offer to apply.

What is the process for getting a UK work permit after study?

You must apply for the UK Graduate visa before your student visa expires. You don’t have to wait until you’ve graduated, but you must have confirmation from your university that you have successfully completed your degree (i.e. you’ll need to wait until you receive your final results).

You can apply online for a UK Graduate visa. With the application, you will need to provide proof of your identity and certain other documents. The visa application fee is £715, and you will also need to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge for each year you’ll be in the UK.

It can take up to eight weeks for a decision on your visa. You are allowed to stay in the UK while you wait.

How long can you stay in the UK to work after graduation?

The UK Graduate Visa allows you to stay and work in the UK for at least two years after you graduate (three years if you have a PhD or other postdoctoral qualification).

What are the eligibility requirements for a UK work permit after study?

To be eligible for the UK Graduate visa, you must be living in the UK and have a current student visa. Your university must confirm with the UK government that you have successfully completed a UK bachelor’s, postgraduate or other eligible course.

For full eligibility requirements, visit the official UK Visas and Immigration website.

Can all international students apply for a UK work permit after study?

All international students who have successfully completed a degree in the UK are able to apply for a UK Graduate visa after finishing their studies.
