Australia Student Visa: All You Need to Know in 2023
What are the requirements for an Australian student visa?
If you've set your heart on studying in Australia for four or more months, one of the first steps is securing a student visa.
The Student Subclass 500 visa is the most common study visa for international students in Australia. This visa requires you to have a Confirmation of Enrolment - also known as a CoE - from your chosen institution. You must also prove that you can financially support yourself for the duration of your stay in Australia and that you have Overseas Student Health Cover, also known as OSHC.
You’ll also need to demonstrate your English language proficiency. PTE is accepted by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for all visa categories and 100% of Australian universities. PTE is a popular choice among international students and known for being faster, fairer and simpler. The computer-based test uses automated scoring so that each candidate can be assessed fairly, accurately and consistently. You can typically expect to receive your results within 48 hours and you can take PTE in nearly 400 locations worldwide. There are several resources available to help you prepare for PTE, including scored practice tests and many other study materials.
A unique feature of the Subclass 500 Student visa is that it allows you to work part-time while you study. From the first of July 2023, on a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the semester and unlimited hours during study breaks. We'll delve into this topic more in-depth later on.
There is a wealth of information and support available to help you navigate the visa application process successfully. Make sure to always refer to the Department of Home Affairs website for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding visas.
You can also get help preparing and lodging your application from a registered migration agent. To find a registered migration agent, consult the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority, also known as OMARA.

Can I stay in Australia for work after study?
For those who've completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree, you could be eligible for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa. This visa allows eligible applicants to live and work in Australia for up to 5 years after finishing their studies at an Australian institution. This is a fantastic option if you’re eager to bring your fresh knowledge into the professional space.
In Australia, you'll also find ample support for your transition into the workforce. Education providers and government bodies organise career fairs, job boards and networking events, which are designed to connect you with potential employers and provide valuable career advice.
