6 Tips to Get a Great Score on Your English Test

If you’re planning to study abroad, you may need to take an English test as part of your application, such as PTE. As a result, you might now be searching for information on what to expect and tips on how to get a great score.

With the right strategy, you can - and will - score well on your next English test. Below, we outline our top seven tips that will help you succeed.

1. Get familiar with the test format

Research the format and content of the English test you will be taking. Look into the specific test requirements and sections, which will most likely focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking. You should also look at the time limits and types of questions on the test so you know what to expect.

PTE offers different kinds of tests, including PTE Academic. PTE Academic is a two-hour test that assesses real-life English through a variety of questions. It is accepted for global study, migration or work. 

2. Do practice tests

Consistent practice is key to getting a great score on your test, particularly so you can better understand the test format. Fortunately, many testing providers offer practice materials to help you prepare.

PTE practice tests are excellent tools for test takers. Not only do you get to see the types of questions that may be on your exam, but you can even have these tests scored. This way, you will know your proficiency level prior to taking the test. You’ll even be able to see the scores you received in each section so you can identify areas that need improvement. 

As these tests are timed, you can both analyse your performance and improve your speed the more you practise.

3. Take an online course

Read different texts in English - including books and online articles - to learn new words and phrases. You can also use flashcards or vocabulary apps to better understand these new words.

Using the words you learn in your day-to-day life is also a great idea as it will help you remember them. You can use them when practising your writing or when speaking to someone in English. 

5. Strengthen pronunciation

Because the test assesses your speaking abilities, make sure you improve your pronunciation. There are many strategies you can use to do this. Start by listening to native English speakers to hear examples of pronunciation.  Audiobooks, podcasts and movies are great resources to check out.

Next, try recording yourself saying some of these words and phrases. Listen back to the recordings to identify any words you may have struggled with and continue practising until you feel more confident with your pronunciation.

6. Write in English

Your writing is another important aspect of your English test. Regularly practise writing in English to improve your spelling, grammar and the presentation of your ideas. You could write about nearly anything; for example, your favourite food, your childhood pet or why you want to study overseas. Writing on a variety of topics will help you feel more comfortable with expressing yourself in different contexts.

It’s also worth seeking feedback from native English speakers - such as friends or tutors - to improve your writing style and accuracy. They’ll be able to advise you on the organisation and clarity of your points.
